WRITER OF THE MONTH

"Never let anyone tell you that you can’t be a writer – or that it’s not practical. Everyone has a story to tell. Don’t be a ghostwriter – it’s a nightmare. Write your own stories."

JOURNALISM COURSE A SUCCESS!
This summer, eight teens attended an intensive writing course hosted by the University of Tennessee and taught by Young Pens' director, Lori Riverstone.

The class, Journalism 101: Writing for the Media, was designed to introduce students to the style of writing most commonly used in the media.

Students were asked to write their own news stories, share their writing with one another, and receive feedback. One student commented: "I learned so much that I didn't know before. I never knew that there were certain ways to do things." Another student noted that the process of writing articles and receiving comments and corrections helped her learn from her mistakes.

Young Pens encourages members to submit news stories about places, people, and events of interest. Accepted news stories will be featured on the YP home page!

SUBMIT YOUR WRITING!

Don't just sit there! TONS of people are waiting to read your work!

One area in particular that we want to build is book reviews. (Read a book lately that you loved? Hated?) Please see the Review page for instructions and suggestions. Writers can also review music, movies, television shows, and magazines.

Other submission areas include poetry (including musical lyrics!), screenplays, fiction, and non-fiction. Want to see another category? Send your suggestion to suggestions@youngpens.org.

JOIN THE YP BOOK CLUB and receive a portion of a book everyday in your email. After two or three chapters, we'll start on a new book! These emails take about five minutes to read and will help you discover new genres and select enjoyable books before you invest a lot of time in them! This week's book is pictured at the right.

The YP Book Club is made possible by DearReader.com and its founder, Suzanne Beecher!

You can join the Book Club by clicking on CONTACT YP and typing "Book Club" in the subject box. Questions? Send them to riverstone@youngpens.org!
